REVERSO - Claude Schmitz: Morphing
(Claude Schmitz Brooch: Pink fruits, 2014 Gold, pink opal)
If discrete classical elements of the physical-material world, such as gold, stone, and patina, were to be synonymous with the works of the classical period, nothing would be more dreary than their continuous use. In the context of jewellery design, the references inherent in the elements’ characteristics and meanings become instantly legible, yet do not remain rooted in the classical realm.
« Claude Schmitz manipulates and works materials, thus referencing tradition – not without a certain irony – while never wholly releasing us into the ambiguity of randomness. All alterations, modifications and manipulations are placed in a temporal context, but they never represent a linear environment. Nature – inorganic and organic – is not self-referential, but grows in the hands of Claude Schmitz into its apposite worldly form. » Dietmar Tanterl, artist (Munich)
